That Confident Man

That confident Man who moved in Israel,
Aware of Heaven’s power at work in Him,
Confronted evil and gave Himself to die
At the hands of sinful men upon the Cross.

In that shadow I die, and in His light
I live to follow His lead — Humbly I step,
With knowledge that daily He saves my soul.
More, O God, make me to be like Him.

The idea for this prayer came from this quote.

The good things of this world

Father, the good things of this world all come from you.
Nothing that is good has any other source.
And all that is bad and evil is not your doing.
Remove harmful and wrong thoughts and motives from our hearts.
Fill our minds with spiritual purpose.
Strengthen our hands for good works.
Fill us with your Spirit of power.
Make Jesus our reason for life.
Grow in us the seed of gratitude.
May the good of this world make us yearn for that of eternity.
Establish our hearts in your grace.
We pray because the Lord is our intercessor. Amen.

Kingdoms cause turmoil

My Lord and my God,

The kingdoms of this world cause turmoil.
Man destroys everything he touches.
Corruption produces more corruption.
The poor suffer, the commoners die.

Our hope wavers not.
Our faith still shines brightly.
The power of Christ works mightily.
Save us, Lord, we plead.

We thank you for our peace of heart.
We praise you, Lord Almighty.
Your love is undiminished.
Come for your people, Lord Jesus!

We pray in the Lord. Amen!

From strength to strength

Holy Father in Heaven,

Your name is blessed among the nations.
Your salvation is reaching more and more people.
The angels of Satan weep and gnash their teeth.
Secure us in the safety of your fold.
Help us face the battle squarely.
Stiffen our spines by your Spirit of grace.
Keep all temptations at bay.
Give us growth from strength to strength.
In us be glorified forever.

In Christ we pray and offer thanks. Amen.

A new and wonderful work

Our holy Father in Heaven
who gave us the new birth:

Praise to your name
for giving us your Spirit!

We thank you for eternal life
and for every blessing now.

In us is no good thing,
for sin destroyed our souls.

Create in us today, O God,
a new and wonderful work.

Bring many into your Kingdom;
make your glory known afar.

Draw us near, keep us strong
in Jesus Christ, our Lord
and only Savior. Amen.

Before the Tyrants of the World

Before the tyrants of the world,
Before important people of power,
The nations’ poor tremble and shake,
But we, O God, your humble children,
Confess your kind and sovereign Reign.

The mighty fall and quickly vanish,
Kingdoms rise and plans are thwarted.
All your words come soon to pass.
Chaotic world! But you control
Its end and bring our final salvation.

My Eyes

O Lord, let not my eyes remove from you,
Neither to the right, nor to the left.
Let them ignore both wind and wave, both peak
of freezing snow and darkest valley of death.
In you I’d see all glory, bright against
The mid-day sun, in power and ancient wisdom,
And reason for each step to reach the Cross.

What we want

What we want is seldom if ever your will, O God.
Your desires are specific and benevolent.
You seek the salvation of every single human being.
Salvation means restoring a person to your presence.
We think of ourselves, to satisfy our selfishness.
Turn our attention from self to others’ needs.
To your glory. To your mission in this world.
To our neighbor’s eternal destiny.
Work in us your transformation of heart and soul.
Make us like the Lord Jesus Christ.
He gave up his glory and his earthly life.
Build our muscles to pick up his cross.
Save us, O Lord, for salvation.

Rest

Sometimes even a computer
needs to be turned off,
then on again.
I need it often.
The mind bubbles in thought,
constantly churning.
A body needs a reset, too.
Thank you, God Almighty,
for your infinite wisdom,
providing us hours and days
and weeks of rest.

Lord Jesus, Save Me

Lord Jesus, save me from my sin,
From harm without, from guilt within.
Throw every wrong in the deepest sea.
A holy man of God make me.

Lord Jesus, save me from this world:
Its surface teems with creatures wild.
Its prince our simple innocence stole.
Restore to me the harmless soul.

Lord Jesus, save me from myself:
The hardened heart is blind and deaf.
Give purpose greater far than I
And life eternal for when I die.
